If you’ve been paying attention to fashion and photography blogs in the past few years, you’ll know that the ‘flat lay’ has become the most popular angle for styling products, food, and everyday accessories. It’s easy to set-up, looks great on any company website or social media account, and can be reinvented again and again throughout your posts! To help you get started in creating your own perfect flat lay, here are 4 tips we think you’ll love:

1. TELL A STORY
Any great flat lay will weave a story about what is happening in a photo. Whether you’re studying in bed, getting brunch with friends, or styling a nature shoot, your audience should be able to understand what’s happening in your shot. Give them something to be intrigued about, instead of something to just look at.
2. CREATE AN ASSYMETRICAL LOOK
Line your props up carefully in your shot, paying attention to space and orientation. You want the overall look to be organized with an effortless element, and not completely staged. Choosing the right surface texture and pattern is also important in making sure your shot is perfectly in line.

3. USE PROPS WITH THEME
Create a specific theme when choosing your props for a flatlay, paying attention to how each prop fits into your story, look, and lying surface. Having too many unrelated props in a photo will make the shot look messy, cluttered, and confusing to your audience.
4. SHOOT FROM ABOVE
The best flat lays are taken while standing directly above your surface, so make sure that you are positioning your camera to be right over your photo. Make sure that the shot also includes all of your props and is lined up.
